"Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them." -Jonah 2:8
Worthless.
That is often how I feel. My mistakes and insecurities weigh me down like gravity consuming the world. Not every day is like this. Some days I feel like I can conquer anything, and then as soon as confidence creeps in, the enemy reminds me of the battle that wages on in my heart.
Idolatry is a poison that destroys the lives of everyone it corrupts. One moment you can feel on top of the world, and the next, at the bottom. For the Israelite's, Idolatry in the form of an altar is what prevented them from entering the promised land immediately after they escaped Egyptian captivity. For David, the idol of lust is what tempted him to pursue Bathsheba. For Judas, wealth encouraged him to betray Jesus.
For me well, where should I begin?
Jonah painted the picture perfectly in his prayer to God after he disobeyed Him. Jonah, called to go to Nineveh and share about God, ran away from his calling and went the opposite way. After fleeing from the Lord, Jonah repents and prays that "those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love."
I am a mess; but I am God's mess. I consistently choose to pursue the idols of this world and flee from the calling that God has for me. I constantly give power to my insecurities and choose to pursue temporarily pleasure instead of eternal joy.
And so, the battle wages on.
I refuse to give in. I refuse to hold on to what is holding me back. I will continue to fight the good fight and let go of what I cling to. God is worth it.
Heck, I am worth it.
And so are you.
