Silence

"For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him." - Psalm 62:5 ESV

Let's play the silence game.

When was the last time you heard that question? Maybe you still hear it... oof.

I once jokingly told my wife that I liked the sound of her voice when she wasn't speaking.

Never said that again.

Silence is a difficult concept for Christians to comprehend. We often interpret silence from God as a lack of interest, a lack of participation, a lack of desire, a lack of trust, or a lack of care for us. As we grow older, our view of silence has become skewed.

Italian philosopher and educator, Maria Montessori, views silence a different way. She introduced the "silence game" to her students to encourage discipline and awareness growth (source here).

In the midst of my loneliness, I turn to this song for encouragement. I am reminded that I am never alone, even if I feel that way. Our natural instinct is to appreciate everything but silence. Maybe that is why Psalm 46:10 encourages us to be still in the midst of chaos:

He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." - Psalm 46:10

Be.

Still

And.

Know.

In the midst of your:

Anxiety.

Depression.

Loneliness.

Fear.

Loss...

God has not abandoned you. Hold on to this truth: Silence is not the absence of God, it is the absence of distractions.
