How to Tie a Tie?

Writer: Jordan Daniel ChitwoodJordan Daniel Chitwood

I dropped my towel and raced to the closet to find my suit and black dress shoes.

It was Saturday.

Saturday meant waking up at 4:30 in the morning, hopping in a lukewarm shower, and deep breathing to emotionally prepare for the debate meet that day.

I grabbed my favorite black pants and red dress shirt.

5:03 a.m. I still had twenty-seven minutes before I needed to be at the school. As I was hobbling out the door trying to put my long dress socks on, my mama called out to me reminding me to grab a tie.

Crap, I forgot my tie.

I ran upstairs, grabbed a pre-tied tie, and hurried back out to my car. My dad always tied my ties for me growing up, and since he passed earlier that year I kept all of my ties pre-tied so I didn't have to worry about tying them the wrong way. I placed the red and black tie around my neck, tightened it, and headed to the debate meet.

Today, was going to be a great day.

How to Tie a Tie According to Hebrews 12

Apparently keeping ties tied for "X" amount of years ruins their quality (smacks face). Eventually, I bought new ties and started from scratch. Youtube has become my best friend for weddings and funerals over the years.

As I swoop the larger end through the loopity loop, I am reminded of a passage in the book of Hebrews:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."- Hebrews 12:1

In a year like 2020, I have been tempted to revert back to my past struggles on countless occasions.

Lust.

Pride.

Anxiety.

Depression.

Insecurities.

Anger.

Excuse-Making.

Fear.

The writer of Hebrews encourages me to throw off all of the things I become entangled in. Failure to do so results in pain and suffering that I will have to work through for the rest of my life.

Much like tying a tie, one wrong move in life can result in a completely different journey. Navigating ourselves back to God so He can disentangle us will lead to freedom, joy, peace, and growth.

So as I continue to reference Youtube or Google on how to tie the perfect Windsor Knot, I will also chase after God before, during, and after I become entangled in sin.

Cheesy? Absolutely. But I Hope you never tie a tie again without being reminded of the God who disentangles us regardless of how many wrong loopity loops we've gone through.
